ESL HORTICULTURAL CLASSES TO BE OFFERED AT
MIRAMAR WHOLESALE NURSERIES
Last October, nearly 25 participants attended the first in a series of horticulture seminars hosted by Miramar Wholesale Nurseries in conjunction with the Cuyamaca College Ornamental Horticulture Program. The six-course series is designed to provide native Spanish-speaking members of the landscape industry with technical training and an introduction to using those technical terms and phrases in English.
"Hosting these courses is a great way for us to contribute to the landscaping industry by helping many industry personnel enhance their job skills. It also provides our company's associates an opportunity to obtain additional education," says Tom Ewing, president of Miramar Wholesale Nurseries. "Knowing English provides our employees with so many opportunities that they would not otherwise have available to them, and breaks down some of the barriers that face them as they advance in the industry. We are pleased to be able to support them through this program."
The first course covered Landscaping Pruning and provided four hours of technical instruction in landscape pruning and four hours of English as a Second Language (ESL) training. The next seminar, scheduled to begin on February 24, will cover Landscape Weed Control.
Future topics include Irrigation Basics, Horticultural Problem Solving, and Turf Management Basics. Each eight-hour course is held at the nursery and is open to anyone 18 years of age or older or with a high school degree. The classes are presented in Spanish in combination with ESL training. Students can pre-register at Cuyamaca College or they may register on the first day of each class at Miramar Wholesale Nurseries.
