GARDEN GROVE, Calif. Some landscape construction projects are
work, and some are fun. The First Place winner of the 2001 San Diego
chapter California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) award for
Residential Estate Construction over $300,000 was both. Mark Schroeder
and Company took home the award last month, which was sponsored by Miramar
Wholesale Nurseries.
There was a lot of oohing and ahing on the job site, said
Mark Schroeder, president of the landscape construction and maintenance
company. And rightly so. The project reads like a wish list for the
outdoor enthusiast: trellised sitting areas, a custom fire pit and barbecue,
a sunken handball court, a skateboard ramp, a succulent garden, a swimming
pool surrounded by artificial rock, plus a waterfall and slide, and
even a 1,500 square-foot artificial putting green not to mention
a veritable forest of palms and olive trees and phormium. The two-acre
home site is located in the Knights Bridge development in Olivenheim.
Nieves Landscape Inc. took home two awards in the category of Landscape
Maintenance of Apartment Buildings and Complexes exceeding $3,000 per
month in the Orange County chapter. These awards were also sponsored
by Miramar Wholesale Nurseries.
Nieves, along with Lyon Management Group in Newport, also received
an Outstanding Achievement Award for maintaining the Las Palmas Apartments
in Fullerton, and a First Place award for Sonoma at Oak Creek, a project
the company has maintained since its opening three years ago.
The CLCA hosts the awards every year. First Place and Outstanding Achievement
awards are available in 20 categories. The awards are judged by landscape
architects who view the properties without knowing who has performed
the work. The CLCA is the nations oldest and largest organization
of licensed landscape and irrigation contractors. Mark Schroeder and
Company has earned seven awards in seven categories in recent years.
This is the first year Nieves submitted entries.
