Daylily Feature: Lightening Bolt

The year was 1996 and the Chargers had just gone to the Super Bowl. Moises Barroso, production manager of Miramar Wholesale Nurseries was observing the daylilies in the testing fields when he noticed a unique sport from one of the plants emblazoned with a yellow streak. He took his finding to General Manager Suzie Wiest, who isolated the unique sport and began propagation. Thus the newest addition to Miramar Wholesale Nurseries’ specialty line got its name—Lightening Bolt!
Like all of the daylily varieties in Miramar’s specialty line, ‘Lightening Bolt’ has been extensively trialed in Miramar’s testing fields right here in San Diego and proven to meet specific criteria. It is a hardy, evergreen that blooms repeatedly in San Deigo’s climate, giving landscape contractors assurance that it will be a top performer in any landscape situation.
Hemerocallis hybrid ‘Lightening Bolt’ meets Miramar Wholesale Nurseries’ selection criteria to be exclusively propagated at the nursery. Just like its name implies, this variety’s six-inch flowers are bright red in color and sport a brilliant yellow streak. It is a continuous bloomer which flowers year round. It reaches a landscape height of 20".
