Need 200 bougainvillea in 24-inch boxes all the exact same color and height? At Miramar Wholesale Nurseries that kind of request is not unusual. As a leader in the commercial landscape industry, MWN frequently grows plants to meet specifications for clients with special needs.
Shopping centers, homeowner associations, apartment complexes, hotels, golf courses, any property with a large area to landscape can benefit from a growing contract. MWN works with the landscape architect’s plan to ensure enough plant materials are available to meet the design specifications. Frequently, that means all the trees, shrubs or flowers have to be the same size, specifications and color, and always must be of consistent quality and complete on time. Plant materials are often not available in consistent quantity to meet that need, resulting in a need to purchase from several different suppliers with different specifications and quality issues. Thus, a growing contract with MWN is a safe and convenient choice for landscape projects.
Most recently, MWN has custom grown plants for the Eastlake Village, a 38-acre property located in Chula Vista in southeast San Diego County. Landscape architects Nowell & Associates wanted an abundance of fountain grass and maiden grass for the site. The theme for the site is an interpretation of old Eastlake ranch – rolling grassy hills with spattering of dark green; the ornamental grasses create the soft, grassy base.
“We like Miramar because they set up our own area in the nursery, clearly mark the plants for our project, and they are local here in San Diego – easy access for us and our client,” said Brad Lenahan, a landscape architect with Nowell & Associates, and the Eastlake project manager. “They also provide great customer service.” MWN is part of the team of consultants and contractors Nowell & Associates assembled for the project. With 225 acres at the San Diego location as well as an additional 86 acres at MWN’s two Orange Country locations, custom growing with MWN is an easy way for landscape architects and project managers to assure their projects will be completed on time with high quality plant materials.
The grasses at Eastlake Village Marketplace are miscanthus ‘Yaku Jima,’ pennisetum rubrum, miscanthus ‘Gracillimus.’ “We used lobelia laxiflora to give that same soft feel and add flowering interest in an evergreen plant for when the grasses are dormant,” Lenahan said.
The project will be produced in two phases, with about 8400 plants in the first phase of the contract, and another 1200 plants in the second phase. The entire project should be complete by the end of June this year. The growing contract order was finalized last year at the beginning of November.
Aside from the interesting plant palette, this project will feature a unique fountain, a 26-foot tall outdoor fireplace, and some very cool outdoor dining spaces. This is the second growing contract MWN has conducted for Nowell & Associates recently.
MWN also provided plants for the Nowell & Associates-designed Fenton Marketplace project, which is located near Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. They grew a variety of flowering perennials, shrubs and ornamental grasses for the shopping center.
Currently, MWN grows plants for five to eight growing contracts each year, with the potential to do many more. MWN sets aside space at the nurseries which is committed for growing contracts only. For more information about your own custom grow from MWN, contact Alan Stockton at (858) 552-0592. While many growing contracts are large, requiring hundreds of plants, some are smaller, needing special, hard to find plants. MWN handles both with the same commitment to excellence. Depending on the plant materials selected, successful growing contracts require an 8 to 12 month lead time. MWN welcomes any proposal from architects and/or landscape project managers.
