Warm up your winter landscape with ‘Firepower’

San Diego,Ca. - SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Brighten up your winter landscape with Nandina domestic ‘Firepower,’ one of the best coloring Nandinas available. The brilliant red foliage offers color fall through winter. Its neat mounds are terrific for borders, massing and containers.

Smaller than its predecessors and impossibly bright, ‘Firepower’ is the consummate accent for Asian-inspired gardens or for shaded landscapes in need of color. Plant it as a single specimen in smaller gardens and courtyards, where its color provides a focal point or accent. Or plant in clusters for a powerful presence in more spacious landscapes. It is perfect as a lacy overhang that won’t block sunlight to water gardens, pools and fountains. This is an ideal plant for spas in small urban backyard gardens.

An evergreen, ‘Firepower’ was developed in New Zealand and requires no pruning. It is moderate growing to 30 inches tall and wide. For the best results, follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Watering can be reduced after the plant is established. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.

Liriope muscari ‘Silvery Sunproof’

Metrosideros coll. ‘Springfire’

We selected this evergreen for its brilliant rose-red, powder-like blooms and compact, upright form. It is excellent as a flowering hedge and thrives in coastal conditions. It features a compact, upright growth, soaring six- to eight-feet high and three- to four-feet wide. Prefers full to partial sun.

Its dense branches are covered with blue-green leaves, and the versatile dwarf size is perfect for today’s smaller gardens. This evergreen prefers full sun and is a slow grower, reaching three-feet tall and five-feet wide.

Cyperus alt. ‘Gracilis’

The narrow, firm spreading leaves are arranged like an umbrella at the tops of this plant’s one- to two-foot stems. It flowers in day greenish-brown clusters, and grows in water or moist soil. This is effective near pools, in small gardens, and in container plantings.
