The Miramar Crew

Behind the scenes at
Miramar Wholesale Nurseries:
Division leads make it happen

Miramar’s nursery inventory is one of the area’s most diverse. Composed of over 1,000,000 units, over 2,000 varieties and over 30 product sizes, the nursery depends on a lineup of talented, devoted and hardworking division leads that take pride in managing their respective products. In this issue, we’d like to introduce the people behind the scenes at Miramar Wholesale Nurseries, each of whom is a valued member of our team and an asset to both our nursery and our customers.

Claudio Ortiz-Martinez: Will-Call Division Lead (Division 1)
The attention and enthusiasm Claudio displays toward his role in assisting customers has earned him the respect of his co-workers and the entire MWN clientele. Whether he is loading bulk materials, restocking the Commercial Landscape Center’s nursery beds or showing a landscaper where to locate a special tree, he is sure to do it with a smile.

Hugo Olea-Cruz: Division 2 Lead
Hugo’s unique ability to choose the correct plant material to shape and groom into a specialty item is the reason he is ideally suited to this position. As division 2 lead, Hugo produces and maintains the nursery’s specialty lines including espaliers, patio trees and vines. He is also responsible for building and maintaining stocking levels for these product lines. Hugo takes pride in his work and it shows in the top-quality material he produces.

Uciel Ortiz-Reyes: Division 3 Lead
Uciel distinguishes himself as someone who will do whatever is necessary, whenever it is needed. A dependable and dedicated employee, he has taken the time to learn the cultural requirements of two of the nursery’s top-selling specialty collections, Hemerocallis and Phormium. As a result, he has been able to train others to irrigate the material correctly, greatly reducing production loss of the more sensitive varieties of Phormium.

Francisco Ortiz-Martinez: Divisions 4 & 6 Lead
A highly skilled tree grower, Francisco understands that tree pruning is an art and he continually strives to further develop his ability to create quality through experience. Francisco concentrates and remains focused on the task at hand until it is completed to perfection. He’ll never settle for second best in either the overall appearance of his division or that of each individual tree.

Jaime Solano: Division 4 North Lead
Jaime came to Miramar as a result of our 1998 acquisition of Vista Hill Nursery. A valuable asset, he is responsible for the nursery’s newest collection of flowering trees, the Vista Hill Collection. Jaime’s experience with these unique varieties has allowed Miramar to perpetuate the quality for which Vista Hill Nursery was known.

Ramiro Morales-Suarez: Division 5 Lead
Ramiro has handled the most challenging role at Miramar Wholesale Nurseries this past year with finesse. Responsible for the canning and material handling of all new production, his crews produced over 3,000,000 equivalent units in 1998. His organizational skills and leadership qualities are shown through the respect he gives to co-workers, while producing mass quantities efficiently. He has worked in the field of production for 15 years, beginning at Springtime Growers in 1984.

Bernabe Mendez-Gonzalez: Division 7 Lead
As one of the first employees of Miramar Wholesale Nurseries, Bernabe was directly involved in the creation and development of each division, section and nursery bed. He has persisted in building the inventory levels of 4" Ivy Geraniums by locating cutting stock around the county while calling on landscape customers and their project supervisors. He became a division lead after training others to take over the various roles he held in technical services, production, order pulling and deliveries. Bernabe possesses true talent and versatility with a “can do” attitude.

Alfonzo Luis-Jara: Divisions 8 & 9 Lead
Miramar’s newest division of five-gallon shrubs is ever-expanding and improving due to Alfonso’s ability to utilize space at maximum efficiency. A solution-oriented leader, he designed a run-off drainage pattern and developed a new section, allowing for over 25,000 square feet of additional production space. He pays close attention to maintaining the inventory levels in his divisions by working closely with the production team. Currently, he is learning the techniques involved in growing quality topiary materials for out-of-state sales division. Knowing his ability to implement new projects, Miramar should have a quality line ready to sell by spring of 2000.

Miguel Olea-Barrios: Field Division Lead
The beautiful field of daylilies at the entrance of our nursery is closely maintained by Miguel. Since he began managing this division, we have seen a significant improvement in the control of weeds, diseases and pests. As this field houses the motherstock of one of our most popular collections, Miguel’s attention to detail and dedication to quality is reflected in every finished plant.

Miramar is proud of these individuals and the plant materials they produce. Their behind-the-scenes commitment supports our company’s goal to be a dependable member of your support team.
