The year was 1996 and the San Diego Chargers had just gone to the Super Bowl. Moises Barroso, production manager of Miramar Wholesale Nurseries, was observing the daylilies in the testing fields when he noticed a unique sport from one of the plants emblazoned with a yellow streak. He took his finding to General Manager Suzie Wiest, who isolated the unique sport and began propagation. Thus the newest addition to Miramar Wholesale Nurseries’ specialty line got its name, ‘Lightning Bolt’!

Like all of the daylily varieties in Miramar’s specialty line, ‘Lightning Bolt’ has been extensively trialed in Miramar's testing fields in San Diego and proven to meet specific criteria. It is a hardy evergreen that blooms repeatedly in San Diego’s climate, giving landscape contractors assurance that it will be a top performer in any landscape situation.

Hemerocallis hybrid, ‘Lightning Bolt,’ meets Miramar Wholesale Nurseries' selection criteria to be exclusively propagated at the nursery. Just like its name implies, this variety’s six-inch flowers are bright red in color and sport a brilliant yellow streak. It is a continuous bloomer which flowers year round. It reaches a landscape height of 20".

To see the new ‘Lightning Bolt’ or any of the other unique daylily varieties exclusive to Miramar Wholesale Nurseries, stop by the nursery.

MWN Expansion

Over the summer months, Miramar’s facility expanded by 50 acres. Part of the expanded acreage will allow for increased production of our Vista Hill Collection of distinctive flowering trees. While emphasizing smaller tree sizes to become shifting stock for future years, MWN is also increasing production of larger specimen trees.

Additionally, MWN has expanded production of ornamental shrubs by 35 acres. The expanded production is intended to serve accounts being developed by MWN’s out-of-state sales division, headed by Mike Kachelein. The division is developing and servicing re-wholesalers and major commercial landscape outlets out of the Southern California region. With shipments delivered this year to accounts in areas such as northern California, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas, most production is pre-booked or contracted for shipment over the spring season. The additional production has the added benefit of increased product depth of many varieties that serve our local accounts’ needs as well.

Miramar Wholesale Nurseries recently completed the expansion of an additional 35 acres. The new expansion is primarily devoted to the nursery’s out-of-state sales division. Production consists of materials committed to commercial users and nursery distributors in northern California, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. These commitments, developed by Miramar's out-of-state sales coordinator, Mike Kachelein, will ship over the spring season of 1999.

Miramar is again hosting Cuyamaca College’s ESL (English as a Second Language) horticultural fall class series. The classes are focused on the landscape industry employee working to improve technical skills, as well as the use of English language. Classes consist of six topics - Plant Identification, Turf Management, Landscape Pruning, Weed Control, Irrigation Basics and Horticultural Problem Solving. The horticulture portion of each class is taught by Cuyamaca College’s adjunct instructor Don Schultz, while the instructor for the English portion is Robin Unger.

Commercial Landscape Center manager, Karen Hill, proudly announces the addition of Brian McDonald and Robin Lelevier to the sales team in the Commercial Landscape Center. The center serves many of the area’s landscapers, property managers and commercial properties seven days a week. Brian and Robin join the team of Ken Danzer, Alan Stockton, Elijio Gonzales, Wayne MacLachlan, Ron Forkner and Adrienne Jensen.

Miramar’s Web page (www.miramarnurseries.com) has been updated with this season's Christmas tree product information. Trees arrive the first of December and are primarily directed to many of the area’s commercial properties and centers. Each year the nursery selects only premium grade 1 trees grown in the Pacific Northwest. Trees are staged under the nursery’s shade structure to ensure freshness. Employees of all MWN customers are welcome.

Special Projects Coordinator, Bob Everett, announced the first of what is hoped to be a number of growing commitments for the new Disneyland theme park, Disney’s California Adventure. The project also consists of extensive city infrastructure improvements surrounding the park.

MWN recently added four new delivery trailers and a semi tractor to its delivery fleet. The trailers will provide improved flexibility, capacity and response time to Miramar’s delivery capabilities.
